Organizational Chart

Unified Board of Knox United Church

The Board recognizes the oneness of the ministry that belongs to God.  That unity of ministry is symbolized by the one Board, which will provide leadership and oversight of the secular and spiritual life of Knox.

Duties and Procedures of the Board
The Board will be made up of the individuals and representatives of those groups indicated in the Constitution Section of the Knox United Church Policy Manual. 

Membership of the Board shall consist of a Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, Past Chairperson, Treasurer, Legislator, Presbyter, a Youth Representative, up to two Members-at-Large, and representation from each of the following committees, all of whom shall be voting members of Knox United Church.

Chairperson of the Unified Board: Richard May
The Chairperson, a full member of the Congregation, shall be elected each year, at the Annual Congregational Meeting, and may hold office for a total of two years of the six years that a Chairperson may be a member of the Board.

Vice Chairperson of Unified Board: Vacant
The Vice-chairperson of the Board, a full member of the congregation, is likely to become the next Chairperson of the Board and should be chosen with care, be able to accept and support generally the current programs and thrust of the work of the Board and Congregation and be able to work effectively and amiably with the members of the Ministry Staff.

Past Chair of Unified Board: Laverna Marchese
The Past Chairperson of the Board continues to play a role in the governance of the congregation. The past Chairperson remains as a voting member of the Board for up to two years following his/her term of Board chair, and during the term of the next Board chair.

Committees & Chairpersons

Communications and Marketing - Chairperson: Vacant
The Committee is responsible for leadership in communications and to assess, plan, teach, augment and develop better forms of communication between the members of the Congregation and between Knox United Church and the community.

Finance - Chairperson: Andre Nehman
The Committee is responsible for the management of the finances of Knox United Church. This includes accounting and control functions as well as financial stewardship functions.  In the absence of a Stewardship Committee, the Finance Committee will assume the role and responsibilities of that committee.

Facilities Management - Co-Chairs: Beverly Reynolds & Mark Weber
It is the responsibility of the Facilities Management Committee to maintain and operate the plant facilities.  The Facilities Management Committee will consult when appropriate with the Ministry and Personnel Committee and the Worship Committee to manage the use of, and supervise, the Church facilities.

Inn from the Cold - Co-Chairs: Derek Bridges & Dave Smith
The co-coordinators are responsible for providing leadership to a congregational-based volunteer program to provide temporary emergency shelter and hope to homeless families and other in need in the context of compassion and respect.

Knox Centre - Chairperson: Don Smith
Knox Centre represents Knox United Church’s commitment to bringing meaningful, thought provoking and contemporary spiritual issues forward within our congregation, Calgary and area United Churches, and city wide for seekers and inquirers of all or no faith backgrounds.  This mandate will be carried out by volunteers and paid ministerial staff. The programs themselves are anticipated to be self-supporting financially - with a modest annual budget for enhancements to facilities, infrastructure and advertising related to Knox Centre programs. For donors who so desire, a Knox Centre Designated Fund has been established to allow directed tax-deductible donations for support of Knox Centre programs exclusively.

Liturgy - Chairperson: Christine Bryce
This Group is responsible to the Board for overseeing the public worship of our Congregation including: 

  • baptism
  • communion music (in collaboration with the Music Committee) 
  • ushering
  • sanctuary enhancement
  • the appropriate use of the sanctuary

 
Membership and Archives - Archivist: Helen Reynolds
Ensure that the key records of the Congregation are being stored properly for safekeeping. To ensure that inquiries concerning historic records of the Congregation receive a prompt and accurate response.

Ministry and Personnel - Chairperson: Loy Bacon
The Committee is responsible to act in an advisory capacity to the Board and as a consultant to the staff, regarding Human Resource related matters.

Mission and Outreach Co-Chairs: Pat Desaulniers & Michael White
The Committee is responsible for the following major areas:

  1. Ensuring that the Congregation is aware of and encouraged to contribute to the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada (such funds to be forwarded directly to the Central Office);
  2. Encouraging the Congregation to contribute to the Local Outreach fund of Knox United Church, (such funds distributed by the Treasurer as directed by the Mission and Outreach Ministry)
  3. Encouraging awareness among the Congregation of issues of social concern and injustice in Calgary, across Canada, and throughout the world and of our responsibility as Christians to work for social justice;
  4. Supporting through financial contributions and informational programs a variety of social agencies locally, nationally and internationally.

Music - Chairperson: Denis Ruf
The Music Committee is responsible for the direction and administration of all musical activity at Knox United Church.  This includes both worship and non-worship events.

Office Management - Office Manager: Mark Wiencki
Office Representative: Chuck Curry
The Office Manager and/or the Office Committee are responsible for ensuring that the Knox Office operates, and that the normal administrative requirements of operating the Knox organization are attended to. Knox views the operation of its office as a ministry to the Knox community and the wider Calgary community. The Office Manager and/or the Office Committee are responsible for seeing that the office achieves a positive blend of caring and efficiency for all who work there or come into contact with it.

Stewardship - Chairperson: Chuck Curry

  1. To be responsible for and encourage the overall stewardship level of the Congregation, so that its best financial potential may be realized.  To this end, the Stewardship Committee in co-operation with the Finance and Facilities Administration Committee shall review annually the total financial objective (local, regional and national).
  2. The Stewardship Committee shall contact every household to encourage the commitment and participation by the congregation in the mission of the Church annually or more frequently as required.

Visiting - Chairperson: Audrey Good
The mandate of this standing Committee of the Board is to foster and maintain a warm, caring relationship with members and adherents of Knox Church with special consideration for shut-ins.

Volunteer - Volunteer Coordinator: Vacant
The Volunteer Committee is responsible for matching the work of the Church to the talents, needs and skills of its members and adherents.

Spiritual Direction and Formation - Chairperson: Margaret Miyagishima
The Committee shall be responsible to work in conjunction with the Ministers and Knox Centre for the provision of religious training for the Congregation.  This includes children, members and adherents of all ages.
